Hi Linda,

I received your comment from www.readynutrition.com. Unfortunately, I do not believe there is one root cause for what caused the Great Depression. As with most economic issues, I believe it was a combination of multiple issues that deteriorated the economic system: spending way beyond one's means, faith in a chaotic stock market, giving the federal reserve as well as banks too much power, and a belief that nothing wrong can happen to America. You can go back into history and see that many civilizations have failed. Civilizations such as the Ancient Greeks, the Chinese, the Russians. All things in nature go through cycles. Perhaps this is America's turn. Whatever the root cause is, the government is doing something wrong, and in my personal opinion, we are repeating history. If you really want to read something that will blow your mind read Armstrong Economics: The Cycle Theory.

I hope this helps with your report.

Linda,

I think I would tip my hat to the pea patch too!
My grandfather and his family also were farmers, and anything they grew they either ate or sold it. He is 85 years old and still has a garden (though not as large as it once was).

If this country has another economic Depression, food shortages may have a devastating effect on this country. More so than the orginal Depression did. We should all look back a little bit in history and remember what other's did in order to get by and prepare the way they did.

Thanks for sharing.

Great article! My own grandparents already had several children by the time the Great Depression hit in 1929. They were sharecroppers in rural Mississippi, and so poor that the "hard times" affected them far less than many city folks, but as with your grandmother, they used everything until it literally wore out because it was so difficult to find money to buy "store-bought goods". Food was one thing they did have, though. My papa once told me that even as an old man years later, he still felt like tipping his hat every time he passed a pea field.
