Old Fashioned Cough Syrup

An old family recipe for cough syrup that was made each year around the cold and flu season.

My grandfather believed in old time remedies. There was no store bough cough syrup in his house! Each year, he would make this cough syrup and hand them out to family members as a way to help them stay healthy. Now that I think about it, maybe he made it for the flavor too. Either way, I wanted to share this old time remedy with you.

As a side note, please don’t give this to children for obvious reasons. Stay well!

Old Fashioned Cough Syrup

1/4 lb. rock candy
1/4lb. peppermint sticks
4 slices orange
4 slices lime
6-10 oz. jar maraschino cherries
6 oz. grenadine
1 pint Southern Comfort Whiskey

Use 1 quart fruit jar (large mouth). Refrigerate. Shake daily until candy melts into liquid.

Dosage: 2 Tbs.

candy stores have the rock candy. Don’t use hard peppermint round candies; they don’t dissolve.
