Mac,

You are so right. Anything that can be done ahead of time, should be done. Here is a great site that has checklists ranging from preparedness checklists to tsunami checklists.

Everyone should be prepared for a disaster. Being proactive and taking time to see what items one has and making a list of what items they need is the first step in making a person or family as prepared as possible.

Preparing for the worst is certainly a good idea, especially when it comes to evacuation procedures. When Hurricane Ike hit the Houston area last year, the majority of people were simply not prepared to evacuate. Prior to evacuation, they had to pack their belongings, acquire food, acquire water, and get gas before every leaving the city. Without a checklist, it could get very stressful and hectic, very quickly.

With an evac checklist, you could be on the road in a matter of 30 minutes to an hour with all your gear. While others are scrambling to figure out what to do next, panicking and yelling at eachother, you're hightailing it out of Dodge. Your evac trip to the next major city might be 3 hours, while those without a plan end up sitting in bumper to bumper for 150 miles for 12 to 15 hours because it took them a few hours longer to get packed and on the road.

The last thing you want to do in an evacuation is be on the road with a million other people.

Spend a couple hours now preparing your lists, and not only will you be ready when and if disaster strikes, but you'll save a ton of time in the long run.
