Using Essential Oils to Naturally Treat Lice

[1]Lice [2] can be quite a nuisance, especially when you have school age children. You have to be ever vigilant in checking your children’s hair to make sure there aren’t creepy critters making a home out of their head.

Because many of us are started to turn our noses up at chemical treatments for lice, here are three ways to naturally repel lice:

We all know that lice love clean hair, but there are a few things they hate; namely certain smells.

Essential Oil

Lice hate the smell of strong herbs such as tea tree oil, peppermint, lavender, rosemary and eucalyptus oil. They also hate the texture of oil, so essential oils are a double whammy. Adding 6-8 drops of tea tree oil or rosemary oil into your child’s shampoo and conditioner can help repel lice if they happen to get on your child’s head. Make sure you shake the shampoo and conditioner well after adding the oils.

Another way to keep lice at bay is with this all natural spray. You can either use this when combing through hair looking for lice or use it as a preemptive measure and spray it on before going to school or an outing with lots of children.

Cootie Spray

  1. Combine all essential oils into a 10 ounce spray bottle and fill with distilled water.
  2. Shake well and spray liberally over hair. Comb through.

Get Your Hair Done

A trick I learned over the years is to use curling irons or flat irons on hair after it has been treated for lice. The heat will kill of any louses and the eggs will not hatch due to the introduction to heat. Further, lice hate hair spray, so fix your child’s hair and spritz the hair with hair spray for a few days.
