There isn’t some kind of world championship of knot tying that people line up to watch, and nobody is going to give you a gold star for tying a perfect bowline. But it is still a very important skill that is often overlooked in the modern world.

Long gone are the days when the world was brimming with sailors and mountain men who lived and died by their tying skills. For most of us, our daily encounter with knots doesn’t go beyond tying our shoes.

That doesn’t mean they’re not useful anymore though. You just won’t find yourself using most of them in your daily life. But when you do need them, they can make a world of difference. Different knots have different applications, and knowing them like the back of your hand can make your life a whole lot easier in a survival situation.
