The World Health Organization has announced that 40% of the 1,900 deaths from Ebola have occurred in the last three weeks.

“The outbreaks are racing ahead of the control efforts in these countries,” WHO chief Margaret Chan said.

The organization has warned that more than 20,000 people are likely to be affected before the outbreak is brought under control. At the current death rate this would see more than 10,000 people lose their lives to the disease.

The clock is ticking.

The more people that are infected the more likely it is that an uncontrolled outbreak will occur outside of Africa. No country has the ability to screen every single person that arrives from West Africa, and as the disease spreads from city to city the chances of an infected person slipping through the net increases.
