Garden fresh marinara sauce is a favorite among gardeners, homesteaders, and preppers. Its flavor can be enhanced by whatever herbs you enjoy and it can preserve for several years.
We all have our preferences when we make our sauces. If you don’t like a chunky sauce, use a hand blender to puree the sauce. You can also transfer the sauce to a blender if you don’t have a hand blender to thin it out. You can make it with as much or as little garlic or spice as you’d like to! You can even make differently flavored and textured sauces to test out which ones you will prefer for next year! The good thing about creating your own food is that you get to decide everything!
This is one of our favorite marinara sauces we made from our garden vegetables. Once you make your marinara sauce, you may find that you have a lot of it leftover. That’s not a problem! There are several great ways to use this delicious sauce up so you can fill your jars with more of it this autumn!
Here are a few ways you can use this versatile sauce:
- Pasta – this one is obvious. Most preppers stockpile all kinds of pasta and it’s an easy one-pot meal.
- Soup – just add water! Tomato soup can be a favorite, especially during the winter months, or when you are recovering from a cold or the flu. Consider adding something creamy to the pot to make the soup a little more hearty and thick. I like to add a whole can of organic coconut milk, but if you have no dietary restrictions, you could add some half and half or heavy cream.
- Thickener for stews – you can add a jar of your sauce to a stew. It’ll make it more hearty and give you more food to share!
- Meatloaf topping – spread the sauce on meatloaf either before or after baking the meat. Whatever your preference, it will be a delicious addition to that dish!
- Squash boats or stuffed peppers – this is a time to get creative! Make any squash boat you want or stuff bell peppers with the marinara sauce.
- Italian grilled sandwiches or Paninis – if you have a panini press or can grill sandwiches, a marinara sandwich. You can add fresh lettuce or arugula. You can also season some chicken or other meat and put some great melting cheese on these sandwiches.
- Dipping for bread – you could simply dip breadsticks or crackers into the sauce too for a delicious and filling snack! The kids will love this one.
