You will find that the weather isn’t the only thing heating up this month, the deals will be too! Take a look below at what to buy in May so you can plan your monthly shopping strategy and make your dollar go further.

This month is packed with holidays and deals and it’s more important than ever to save as much money as you can. As prices continue to go up and supplies are becoming more difficult to find, it’s critical that you look for things that are going to be more abundant this time of the year. For instance, Cinco de Mayo will bring discounts on Mexican foods, so stock up on canned beans, tortillas, ro-tel tomatoes, and salsa to bulk up your prepper pantry. Some of these items can be bought in bulk, saving you even more!

Mother’s Day will also bring some sweet deals to take advantage of. Items like live plants and perennials, journals and books (great to add for emergencies), and women’s apparel. Look for fruit trees that are marked down to make room for other plants.

These can be great additions to your orchard! Also, look for plants are marked as great for pollinators especially if you have honey bees! You can never have too many plants that produce pollen to help your bees get going after a long winter!

Around Mother’s Day, you may also find some great deals on candles. Grab several to keep around for those times the power goes out. Candles are an excellent addition to any preparedness supply.

May is an excellent time to snag the fresh produce you have been craving all winter. And during this month, you can snag it at a great price. Don’t worry if you can’t use it all at once, you can always freeze, can, or dry what you can’t use right away. Look for seasonal favorites such as:

  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus
  • Blackberries
  • Carrots
  • Sweet corn
  • Peas
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Blackberries
  • Green beans

Grilling and cookout supplies will also be discounted, especially as we approach Memorial Day at the end of the month. So stock up that pantry on items that are left and on clearance like lighter fluid, charcoal, and paper products (paper towels, paper plates, etc.).

Additionally, cookout foods can be on sale and are also great for stocking up the food pantry for emergency preparedness reasons. Some of our summer favorites will be on sale, like:

  • BBQ sauce
  • Marinades
  • Ketchup
  • Assorted Condiments
  • Salad dressing
  • Dips and potato chips
  • Sodas and drink mixes
  • Hot dogs
  • Buns and bread products
  • Baked beans
  • Salt and pepper, seasoning salt, steak seasonings, etc.
  • Bottled water

As well, take advantage of free food growing near you. Foraging for your own food or medicine may become a necessity in the coming months unless you want to fork over massive amounts of money for a limited amount of food.
